Nothing to fire us up at the end of a long week than the glorious Aussie anthem that is John Farnham’s ‘You’re The Voice’, and it’s a very brave choice to make for anyone stepping into the triple j studio to play a Like A Version cover.

As Bec Sandridge steps to the mic, the swelling synth and ratatat drum hits signal a faithful cover right off the bat, but quickly drop away in favour of a sparse composition anchored around Bec’s vocals. Soon the electric guitars strike to imbue the track with a bit of extra ’80s charm, and things slowly but surely begin to ramp up.

In choosing an anthem like this one to live up to, however, Bec may have laid out for herself an impossible task. Farnham’s vocals are always going to be very, very tough to compare to, even when reinterpreting the track in her own way, and unfortunately the cover never comes close to hitting the original’s soaring heights, not helped by a slightly clunky arrangement.

Still, Bec’s a great artist and we’re always hoping to see acts try some new and interesting things on Like A Version, so give this one a spin below and let us know what you think.
