A Comprehensive Guide To Record Store Day 2016 Releases

We may be alone in this, but for us, the dawn of a new year is basically a countdown to Record Store Day. Taking place on the third Saturday of April each year, it’s a special day set aside to celebrate independent record stores, the little battler in the modern music industry.

Of course, the most exciting part about Record Store Day is getting your hands on the list of RSD exclusive releases. Major labels and independents alike organise special, often limited edition releases and reissues just for the special day and this year is no different.

As Gigwise reports, this year will see a swag of awesome limited edition releases, including reissues of David Bowie’s ‘TVC 15’ and ‘The Man Who Sold the World’ on picture disc, plus the 50th anniversary release of his Pye singles, ‘I Dig Everything – The Pye Years 1966’.

There’ll also be a 16-track LP of Mac DeMarco demos, an incredible recording of Patti Smith’s Horses live at Electric Lady Studios, Run the Jewels’ very own virtual reality viewer, and The Runaways’ rare ‘Right Now/Black Leather’ single reissued on cherry-red vinyl.

Bryan Ferry : The Island Singles 1973 – 1976 7″ Box Set Just over a year after Roxy Music broke through, leader Bryan Ferry began a parallel solo career that has gone from strength to strength to the current day. His initial choice of material was groundbreaking; to take the material of Bob Dylan, songs from soul music and the Great American Songbook, and add a touch of glamour and rock to them. The results sound as audacious today as they did back then. These singles (from the albums These Foolish Things, Another Time, Another Place and Let’s Stick Together) complimented the original material Ferry wrote for Roxy Music. The B-sides offered re-recorded versions of songs from Roxy Music’s debut album. His final Island release, Extended Play, from 1976 reintroduced the thrill of the four-tracker that was so popular in the 60s. With replica European picture sleeves and on heavyweight vinyl, The Island Singles 1973-1976 is a beautiful addition to this year’s RSD line up.

Elton John : The Thom Bell Sessions 12″ Following a temporary hiatus in his partnership with longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, Elton John turned to producer Thom Bell and the warm sounds of Philly soul for his next step. Bell was already a name producer for his work with some of the decade’s biggest R&B acts such as the Spinners, the Stylistics and the Detroit Spinners and, while recorded in 1977, the fruits of their collaboration would not find an official release until 1979 by which time Elton’s ever-restless muse had already moved on. Isley Brothers, The : This Old Heart Of Mine LP While already considered one of THE seminal Detroit groups of the era, The Isley Brothers’ ‘This Old Heart Of Mine’ was their fourth studio album and their first for the legendary Motown label. The majority was written and produced by the unstoppable Holland-Dozier-Holland team and the title track would go on to be the biggest hit of the Isleys’ early period. James : Greenpeace Palace Concert 2LP In the substantial roll call of James live shows, the Greenpeace Palace concert has achieved an almost mythical stature. The track ‘Ring The Bells’ was issued to the delight of fans on the 1994 ‘Alternative NRG’ compilation on the Hollywood label and the live version of ‘America’ that was included as a B-side on their ‘Sometimes’ single (albeit slightly remixed) is also believed to have been taken from this performance although that has never been officially confirmed. Otherwise this powerful 12 track acoustic performance remains unreleased until now. MAX ROMEO : Give Thanks EP 12 inch, Limited edition of just 600 Worldwide Max has teamed up with British producer Daniel Boyle, who had recently finished a long stint working with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry on rekindling the Black Ark sound for a number of releases, which culminated in the acclaimed & award winning album ‘’Back On The Controls’’.Daniel’s vision for the Max Romeo project was to take the rekindled Black Ark studio set up, which he and Lee had created at Daniel’s Rolling Lion studio in London, and blend a mix of the old and new with it, to create a follow-on from War Ina Babylon. The idea was to make a truly heavyweight roots reggae album; driven by Max Romeo’s powerful and conscious lyrics.For this project, Daniel and Max rounded up some of Lee Perry’s old Upsetters line-up, including Vin Gordon on trombone, Robbie Lyn on keyboards, and Glen DaCosta on saxophone, blending these veteran Jamaican studio legends with Daniel’s ever evolving ‘Rolling Lion All Stars’ session band, to create a reggae super group, with some added input from Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry himself on percussion, effects and backing vocals.To complete the concept, Daniel connected with Tony Wright, who was bought on to design and hand-paint the cover art. Tony was responsible for hand painting many famous album covers during the 1970s and beyond, including Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Natty Dread, Lee Perry’s seminal dub album Super Ape, Junior Murvin’s Police and Thieves, Ijahman Levi’s Haile I Hymn, and many more…A real blend of the old and then new. The concept was then taken to Tony Wright, who designed the stunning artwork, hand-painted in oils, taking the woman he featured on the War Ina Babylon cover; and bringing her into our modern day world—the real ‘Horror Zone.’

It was released to huge acclaim in March 2014. Originally a Wedding Present side-project, the band mixed British post-punk indie guitars with fiddles, accordion, mandolins and the musical styles of the Carpathian mountains. The result is a very powerful record: highly emotionally-charged songs with truly memorable melodies – a perfect blend of East and West. A VOX magazine Album of the Month in early 1993, this record explodes with confidence and originality. For the first time on vinyl (and a double at that!), Vorony is extended from 15 to 19 tracks, to include all the songs from the sessions. Produced by world music guru Harri Kakoulli, once a member of Squeeze. The success of Vorony at the time was such that the band played prestigious spots at both Glastonbury and Womad festivals and undertook a 110 date world tour.
