Big Day Out is set to relaunch with a bang this year with a re-boot of sorts taking place in the form of a stellar lineup, the return of the Lilypad, and the promise of a new frontier in the culinary aspect of the one-day festival with the introduction of Chow Town.

However, the festival has not been without it’s bad luck. We recently reported that this year’s Big Day Out has already experienced a small run of misfortune, specifically in Perth with a soon-to-be-instated curfew dictating that the festival will have to conclude an hour earlier in Western Australia than in other states due to repeated council complaints.

Add to this the news that the Gold Coast leg of the Big Day Out is also looking for a new home for 2014 after being evicted by the Queensland State Government who are transforming the festival’s regular site at the Parklands showground into an athletes’ village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Now, one of the festival’s major drawcards, indie collective Animal Collective have now had to cancel a New Zealand tour date and re-schedule their Sydney show due to a lag in the delivery of their gear.

The Baltimore ensemble are touring Australia and New Zealand in support of their ninth studio record, 2012 ‘s Cenitpede Hz, which received wide acclaim with many stating it as a marked return of the Animal Collective fans know and love. Including our Tone Deaf reviewer who agreed, saying, “the constantly astonishing thing is that they can still create sing-a-long moments…”

Speaking about the problems surrounding their impending Australasian visit, the band have issued a statement to fans via their Facebook page reading:

“Dear fans,

It’s with much sadness and regret that we have to cancel our show in Auckland on January 14th. Unfortunately our equipment’s arrival has been delayed and will not arrive and clear customs in time for the show. We tried our hardest over the last few days to find a promoter and venue that could do the show at a later date before or after Big Day Out, but have been repeatedly told there are no available options.

We will also have to move our Sydney show at the Enmore to January 17th, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause fans that were planning to come on the 16th. We truly are heartbroken to have to have to be sharing this news. We know words of apology don’t go very far in making this situation right, but please trust us when we say that New Zealand is one of our favorite places in the world and when the opportunity arises to return, we’ll do everything in our power to do so.

Love, AC”

This isn’t the first time this year an international act has had issues with their equipment.

Recently, after an appearance at Falls Festival in Lorne and Marion Bay, The Flaming Lips’ famed giant laser hands  (a staple of their incredible live show) went missing at Western Australian music festival Southbound. Lead singer Wayne Coyne filed his official missing hands report via his Twitter page. Luckily, the props in question later turned up in a paddock. Here’s hoping 2013 isn’t the year of shoddy gear.

Tickets already purchased for the Sydney show will be valid for the rescheduled date. Refunds will be available from place of purchase for ticket holders that cannot attend the replacement show.
