Arcade Fire’s fifth studio album, Everything Now, is set to be released on Friday, and understandably both the band and fans are excited about the record’s release. However, an announcement in regards to the dress code for punters heading along to the album’s release event has raised a few eyebrows.

As Stereogum reports, Arcade Fire are set to host the Everything Now release show, which is taking place in Brooklyn on Thursday night, and will be live-streamed by Apple Music. In a message sent out to ticketholders (who had to apply for tickets and answer ‘What do you like about the first single from the new album?’ to be eligible), the concert’s dress code was outlined. “HIP & TRENDY as if you are going to a concert or night out with friends,” said the dress code. “PLEASE DO NOT WEAR shorts, large logos, flip flops, tank tops, crop tops, baseball hats, solid white or red clothing.”

The information also outlines a “PHONE-FREE VIEWING EXPERIENCE”. “No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed at this show,” the message says. “Upon arrival, all phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show. Guests maintain possession of their phones throughout the night, and if needed, may access their phones at designated Yondr unlocking stations in the lobby.”

As you would expect, fans took issue with this somewhat strict dress code, with many news outlets writing about it. Seemingly, this caught the attention of Arcade Fire member Win Butler who took to Twitter via his personal account to clear the air. “Band has nothing to do with a dress code or taking people’s phones,” he said. “Must be an @apple thing. Maybe Black turtlenecks :)”. The official Arcade Fire Twitter account soon followed suit, and released their own statement: “Band announces, “Wear whatever you want to any show.” This has been an actual band announcement.”

While the group haven’t let slip any Aussie tour plans lately, we can only hope audiences at their eventual Australian shows won’t be forced to adhere to such a strict dress code… at least until the band intervenes.
