At The Drive-In, creators of some of the best rock music of the last 20 years, have unleashed a new video for ‘Call Broken Arrow’, the fourth single from their comeback record, in•ter a•li•a.

Serving as a prequel of sorts to the album track ‘Hostage Stamps’, the video for ‘Call Broken Arrow’ is a stop-motion affair that mixes in some digital animation to deliver a decidedly eerie experience for viewers. Continuing the same plot as established in the video for the previously released ‘Hostage Stamps’, the clip shows a prisoner escaping some faceless captors, and it also includes some mechanical spiders, in case you didn’t plan on sleeping tonight.

Director Rob Shaw spoke about the video, explaining the plot, and how it gives more backstory into how the prisoner ended up in jail to being with. “In ‘Hostage Stamps’, we have a prisoner being tortured and monitored by some sort of authoritarian organisation,” he explains.

“The guys wanted to show why he was imprisoned, as well as cast doubt over his innocence. It’s funny how in stories, especially film stories, you tend to sympathise with whoever you spend time with. When you watch someone being mistreated, the assumption is that person is the victim. ‘Call Broken Arrow’ is in part about illustrating the prisoner’s culpability, but even that is in doubt as we see the Watcher character who follows him around slipping something in his drink at the end.”

At The Drive-In released their comeback record in•ter a•li•a back in May, much to the delight of eager fans who had been waiting 16 years for another brilliant album from the group.

Even though they were only in the country a year ago for Splendour In The Grass, and some very well-received side shows, the Texan crew are set to hit up Australia in September for a short run of shows, including an appearance at Wollongong’s Yours & Owls festival.
