Sydney rock band Bluejuice have announced that they are calling it a day but before they hang up their instruments, they’re embarking on a final farewell tour and releasing a new single and a retrospective compilation.

A statement issued by the band this morning reads: “After 13 years of broken bones, broken hearts, sore heads, passive aggression, regular aggression, several arrests, questionable skin infections, and a busload of infuriated tour managers, Bluejuice are announcing they are calling it quits at the end of 2014.”

The band indicate the decision is down to wanting to “take a peek at what exists on the other side of the velvet curtain, to work on new things,” and in typically humorous Bluejuice fashion, “to hopefully wear their sequined leotards less often.”

To commemorate their career, Bluejuice will be issuing Retrospectable, a collection of tracks from their three studio albums – full-length debut Problems (2007), breakout LP Head of the Hawk (2009) and 2011’s Company.

The compilation will feature a handful of new tracks, including final single ‘I’ll Go Crazy’, an upbeat guitar-driven number co-written by frontman Jake Stone with Sparkadia’s Alex Burnett and produced by Evermore’s Dann Hume (Alpine, Sticky Fingers).

Bluejuice will then embark on a final national tour this September and October to bid their fans a fond farewell with the formidable, high-energy live show that has characterised their career. As the band put it: “It will be Bluejuice’s destructive last hurrah, so catch them going out the only way they know how: deafeningly loud, a bit drunk, and dancing maniacally into the night.” Full dates and details below.

Led by the central duo of Jake Stone and Stavros Yiannoukas, Bluejuice first formed in 2001, delivering their first full-length album of indie-minded pop and rock injected with impish humour on Problems. The album’s lead single, ‘Vitriol’ was the band’s breakout tune, ranking at #11 on 2007’s Triple J Hottest 100 and according to the band “still holds the position of the most played song on Triple J.”

The band’s popularity with the national youth radio station continued in 2009, when they broke into the Top of that year’s Hottest 100 with ‘Broken Leg’, the lead single from their second full-length album Head of the Hawk. The album also debuted at #37 on the ARIA Albums Chart upon release.
