We previously announced his impending arrival to our shores and now, in less than two weeks, the un-disputed godfather of underground rock, Bob Mould will be touring Australia with tour supports announced.
Brissie locals Screamfeeder are reuniting as their classic three-piece lineup for a very special one-off return performance at the Zoo. Sydney indie favourites Knievel will play the Factory Theatre on the back of their recently released album The Emerald City and indie punk rockers Further will support Bob at his Annandale show.
Davey Lane will perform songs with his new band from his forthcoming debut album at Melboune’s sold out Corner show, while the second Corner Hotel show will host post punkers Infinite Void and fuzzed out hi-fi lo-fi rockers Iowa. Sincerely, Grizzly will take the Adelaide stage and The Ghost Hotel and Kill Teen Angst will play at the Rosemount in Perth.
After more than 30 years, countless album releases, an autobiography and a tribute concert where the likes of Dave Grohl and Ryan Adams paid homage to him, Bob Mould is still kicking ass and taking names and brings all his alternative classics back to be experienced as they should be – live and on stage. Bob Mould will dip into his most recent solo outing, Silver Age, cuts from the Sugar classic Copper Blue, as well as a healthy dose of Hüsker Dü tracks for good measure.
The powerful and ever-fresh debut album Copper Blue, written and co-produced by Bob Mould, draws on the punk of Hüsker Dü and tempers it with prominent melodies and mature writing. Copper Blue uses the classic three-piece set-up together with a smattering of synthesizer, a touch of harpsichord and a fistful of bite.
The album was a blistering success far eclipsing the sales for his previous outfit and was voted Album Of The Year (1992) by NME. Even now Mould still seems pleasantly surprised by its success. “I got lucky,” he says. “It’s one of those records that sounds like it’s 20 years old; it sounds like it’s 50 years old; it sounds like it was made last week.”
With the release of tenth solo record, Silver Age, Bob Mould has, in a sense, embraced his past and returned to the spirited guitar rock that was missing in past solo outings, recalling the same feelings of excitement encountered way back in the Sugar days and it has not gone unnoticed. The record has Consequence of Sound proclaiming that ‘…Mould has made his best record in over a decade…” and Pitchfork deciding that ‘Silver Age’s bounty of direct, distort-pop hits measures up to Mould’s gold standard’.
From his time in Hüsker Dü, to the powerful and ever-fresh debut album from Sugar, Copper Blue, all the way up to last year’s solo outing, Silver Age have well and truly cemented Bob Mould as an alternative God, laying the foundations for the surge of alternative rock and power punk of the 1990s as well influencing some of today’s rock icons.
