We’ve previously touched on just how big Sydney three-piece DMA’s are becoming overseas. By their own estimate they’ve played “more times in London and Glasgow than we did in Sydney last year”.

But not all the feedback they’ve been receiving from their overseas audience has been positive. In fact, some of it has even been cause for concern and a few extra security guards at their gigs.

Speaking recently to triple j, in the midst of their sold-out national tour to support debut album Hills End, members Jonny Took and Matt Mason revealed they recently dealt with a stalker.

Apparently, a “crazy” German gentleman began sending the band death threats whilst the trio were touring through Europe. The threats began as abuse on the band’s official Facebook page.

“There was a couple of weeks out before playing Munich, and we had this guy – lots of swearing on our page, just hated us – he goes, ‘When you’re in Munich – Dead,'” the band recounted.

“I thought this was really funny but our manager didn’t think [so] and alerted the venue. So there was four security guards on stage, they brought in a metal detector for the front door.”

“It was kind of weird, because it was on Facebook. We even found his picture and all of a sudden during the gig we were like, ‘Is that… that’s the killer!’ We were making jokes on stage.”

“We looked at our bass player Tom and were like ‘chk-chk’. But then Tommy [O’Dell, singer], before we went on stage, was like, ‘Can we chill?’ He didn’t find it funny.”

In a terrifying turn of events, the band ended up coming face-to-face with the man. “I actually met the guy afterwards, he came up and he was just a little bit crazy,” the band members said.

“There was an entrance to backstage that went onto the street, I remember [Mason] went out for a ciggie or something… and he was there.”

Thankfully, the face-to-face encounter ended without incident or injury. “He was just nuts. He couldn’t really speak English well, so we didn’t really know what was going down,” the band said.

Having survived their first crazed fan experience, the band are already focusing on their next album and recently took some time out from their tour to record a few songs in a London studio.
