It’s never really been a secret that Western Australia produces some amazing music. From bands like Jebediah in the 90’s, to artists like Tame Impala, Abbe May and Koi Child who swept the 2016 WAMAwards, the often overlooked state has clearly got some amazing music to its name. Now, it’s again time to recognise the songs that make the state great.

WAM (Western Australian Music) have now opened up for submissions for their annual Song Of The Year competition. Previously won by artists such as Lash, Beaverloop, and Georgi Kay, it’s a prestigious honour that recognises some of the finest talent that emerges from Australia’s left side.

This year’s competition sees entrants in the running to win a share of $40,000 worth of prizes, with the grand prize winner being lavished with their share of cash, professional studio time, musical equipment, and a spot on the 2017 WAMFest lineup.

The competition is running until February 9th, and features 16 categories, covering blues/roots, country, electronic, experimental, folk, jazz, metal/heavy, punk/hardcore, pop, rock, urban/hip hop and world.

Additional categories are also included for schools (both 14 years & under, and ages 15-17), as well as outstanding Indigenous and outstanding regional artists.

If you’re a Western Australian muso who made some music in the last year, check out the WAMs Song Of The Year website, and who knows, you could be a household name in no time.
