The 30th June launch date for Apple’s eagerly anticipated dive into the streaming market is fast approaching and having hopefully put that dispute and/or PR stunt with Taylor Swift behind them, they’ve gone all Tidal on everyone and announced the big names set for their radio station.

Earlier this year it was reported that Apple Music had hired BBC staple Zane Lowe to help establish their new internet radio department. But the radio veteran is hardly the biggest name the tech giant has signed on to Beats 1, which it was also reported will feature Drake and Pharrell as DJs.

According to a profile mostly focused on Lowe, The New York Times reports that St Vincent, Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age, Disclosure, Elton John, and Jaden Smith will all host shows on Beats 1. Beats co-founder and hip-hop icon Dr Dre will also have his own show called ‘The Pharmacy’.

With an incredible, all-star array of DJs and curators to boast and an international reach, Beats 1 could prove the death knell to traditional radio. After all, the free radio app will automatically be included on Apple’s phones, laptops, and tablets.

According to The New York Times, each musician will “host and plan the shows themselves” and some of the ideas came courtesy of Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who’s been part of the Beats creative team since they were just a headphones company.

“I wondered if in today’s world there is still a place for monoculture,” said Reznor. “Can that still exist?” Inspired by the “monoculture” of Lowe’s BBC 1 Radio show, Reznor wants to recreate the feeling for Apple, with Lowe conducting interviews on air. Lowe’s first interview will be with Eminem.
