The fast approaching end of 2012 has christened the release of Billboard‘s Hot 100 songs for the year, and to no surprise, an Australian is sitting gracefully on top of the list – earning him the title of the highest selling single of 2012.

Award winning Australian Gotye – who has just wrapped up his Australian headline tour – has topped the US top 100 list of songs with world beating hit ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, outshining names such as fun., Maroon 5, Rihanna, and Flo Rida to claim top spot on the list.

The Making Mirrors single topped the list in several categories, including #1 radio track and #1 digital track. To go with this, Gotye’s smash hit single also ranked #5 on the list for best selling ringtone this year in the US, as well as having a remix of the track featured at #6 Dance/Club track of the year.

Gotye also ranked at number 24 on the Top Artist of 2012 charts, with Kimbra, the duetting partner on the ubiquitous hit, ranking at 84. Gotye’s Making Mirrors peaked at #27 on the 200 top selling albums of 2012 chart, with British songbird Adele perched at the top of the list.

Also flying the flag for Australia was Sia, featuring on Flo Rida’s dance-infused anthem ‘Wild Ones’ pollin at #11, with her other cameo – guesting on David Guetta’s ‘Titanium’ – coming in at #24 on the highest selling tracks for 2012. On the dance genre theme, Havana Brown’s ‘We Run The Night’ came in at the bottom end at number 90, rounding out the Australian presence.

The announcement of the list only adds to Gotye’s trail of world domination, adding to his recently announced three nominations for the 55th Grammy Awards, in which the experimental Melbourne musician is tipped to once again take the stage for another acceptance speech.

Closer to home however, the whirlwind tale of success continued as Gotye dominated Australian music’s night of nights late last month as he swept the ARIA competition aside to go back to back in numerous fields, taking out several gongs, including the coveted Album Of The Year. Mr Wally De Backer also took hom the ARIA for the publicly voted Best Australian Live Act, as well as Best Male Artist, and Best Pop Release – both Awards he won last year.

The latest news only adds to the storming success of ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, which is also one of the most streamed songs of the year according to the UK’s new streaming chart, and its body-paint video clip became one of the most watched YouTube videos of all time, (currently sitting at over 350+ million views).

Earning the status of the highest-selling single in America is also ironic, given that earlier this year Gotye was named among the most pirated artists in America, with Making Mirrors falling within the Top 10 of the most illegally downloaded records from the period of January to June of this year.

It seems nobody can escape the rise of Gotye in 2012.
