Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus said the band has begun pre-production for a new album.

“We’ve been recording a lot of stuff, just ideas, assembling ideas, but not going into a studio and actually tracking a new record,” Fortus revealed on the Stage Left Podcast.

Fortus has been with the band since 2002, and is currently touring with the Not In This Lifetime lineup, which features classic-era linchpins Slash and Duff McKagan  – it will be interesting to see if they end up contributing to the news Gunners record. It’s a pleasing sign, but considering Axl’s history we won’t be expecting anything to be released too soon.

“It’s sort of too good not to happen at this point,” Fortus said. “That’s how I feel about it. This band is really a force right now and I definitely hope that we do and I think we’re all sort of counting on it and we’re also planning on it.

“I think the genius of Axl is his ability to assemble songs, from different parts, and make them feel cohesive as a song. I’ve never seen anybody able to do that in the same way.”

Chinese Democracy came out in 2008, after a ridiculously protracted recording process. So, as I said, we’ll see.
