Inimitable, unpredictable, and frankly a little bit bonkers, Kirin J Callinan has just followed last week’s excellent mini-rockumentary on his upcoming sophomore album with the first proper taste of the record.

Callinan chatted with triple j about lead single ‘Bravado’, and why, despite the name, Callinan sees little of his trademark swagger in the song itself.

“The vocal we ended up using was the very first performance of the song, even though we tried later with nice microphones and refined lyrics and we developed the melody and all this stuff, it just didn’t have the genuine emotion of the first vocal.

“For that reason it’s one of the harder songs for me to listen to because I actually hear in it my own vulnerability and it’s very earnest and honest and I find it one of the most challenging songs on the record to personally enjoy, and that’s why I thought we should lead with it as the main single.”

Give the new track a listen and watch below, and if you haven’t seen the new doco starring the likes of Jack Black, Mark Ronson and more, don’t waste another minute – the new record itself is set to drop midway through the year.
