Perth avant-jazz/ hip hop fusion collective Koi Child are one act we’ve been keeping a very close eye on.

The guys captured our attention back in August last year with the release of their single and video ‘Black Panda’ which was described as “something akin to the very best old school rap videos… half-Beastie Boys, half-NWA” and featured a cameo from Pond’s Nick Allbrook.

The crew have today dropped a new teaser of what to expect from their upcoming debut LP in the form of jazzy and euphoric psych-tinged single ‘1-5-9’.

Set for release on March 18 (via Pilerats/ Warner), the self-titled debut full length was recorded in Mangebong on an island south of Perth and produced by Tame Impala mastermind Kevin Parker.

Koi Child’s keyboard player retells the experience of recording an working with the Aussie music legend “We recorded the album in a little house on an island which included a nerve wracking river crossing on a boat, with a large amount of loaned recording gear. The shack-turned-recording studio made for a really nice vibe: swimming in the river, recording vocals in the kitchen, sinking an ungodly amount of tinnies and encounters with giant weirdo spiders.”

Tom adds, “Kevin taught us so much about production and songwriting. His mixing brought so much life and glow to tracks we’d heard a thousand times. We’ll be forever indebted to him for being so generous with his time, creativity and talent… what a bloke.”

Check out the insanely fun track below and catch the guys when they tour the country throughout March and April in support of the LP, tour dates below.
