With the arrival of Friday comes one of our favourite Triple J segments, Like A Version, which this week featured Welsh singer-songwriter Ryan Van McCann of Catfish and the Bottlemen who made a bit of a bingle.

Chatting with hosts Matt and Alex, Van McCann informs that he’ll be covering ‘Read My Mind’ by The Killers because the lyrics are “class”, however he decided to give it a different spin and play acoustic because as he states “we’ve already ripped off The Killers enough over the years” which instantly brought the house down.

Continuing, he defended his decision to strip the tune back, joking that everyone would comment “oh they’re just ripping The Killers off, but he can’t sing as good and has does haven’t nice teeth”.

With a flick of the switch, the Welshman turned from jokester to serious as he begun what promised to be the best Like A Version of 2015.

Soaring through The Killer’s smash-hit from Sam’s Town of 2006, Van McCann was doing well up and until the 2:27-minute mark where he sings the wrong lyrics, stopping completely to say “I’ve sung the wrong verse, can I carry on? Anybody else just mind me carrying on like that? Live music, that’s what the kids want!” as he commandeers the rocky train back on the rails.

After this, Van McCann then begins to chorus R Kelly’s classic track ‘Ignition’ completely out of the blue, stunning the presenters and undoubtedly listeners too, which actually flows pretty seamlessly.

Despite messing up the lyrics, this is a heartfelt rendition of ‘Read My Mind’ and Van McCann definitely didn’t allow his Like A Version appearance to fall apart.

In saying that, Van McCann alongside the remainder of the band still have three shows remaining in Australia and as you can see from his stunning vocal delivery, they’re definitely an experience worth checking out – see the remaining tour dates below.
