February was a month full of surprises, one of the the most exciting was the announcement that Blur were releasing a new record The Magic Whip in April of this year, sharing the catchy tune ‘Go Out’, and over the weekend they shared another song from the forthcoming record, ‘There Are Too Many Of Us’.

The catalyst for the track came from Damon Albarn’s experience of the tragic Sydney siege of December 15 last year, the frontman being forced to cancel his appearance at the Sydney Opera House due to the horrible happenings at Martin Place, as NME (via Triple J) reports.

Speaking with the British publication, Albarn explained the lyrics of ‘There Are Too Many Of Us’, “I actually finished the lyric after having come back from Australia, I was there the day they had the hostage situation in the chocolate shop, which was an extraordinary thing to witness. I was staying in a hotel where I could literally see what was going on outside and watch it on television.

“I’ve never been in that position before, and as a songwriter that was a very interesting standpoint to have. To be seeing something on TV, and then out the window it’s happening. Seeing the reality of what was happening and how it was being distorted through the prism of [the camera] was kind of fascinating.”
