Mastodon have had a pretty big year. Between guitarist Brent Hinds proposing to his girlfriend onstage, and the band preparing like Navy Seals for their new album, the group found time to release Emperor Of Sand, their first record since 2014’s Once More ‘Round The Sun. Now, with the group announcing that they’ve got another record in the works for this year, they’ve given us the first taste.

When Mastodon released Emperor Of Sand back in March, fans started thinking they might have to endure another three-year wait between records. Thankfully, with Mastodon being the loving gents that they are, the group announced a few weeks back that they’re set to release a brand new EP called Cold Dark Place in September.

The new EP is set to consist of three tracks recorded during the Once More ‘Round The Sun sessions, and one track recorded during the Emperor Of Sand sessions. Of course, while some fans may wish for new material rather than a continuation of the themes addressed in previously released material, smart fans will welcome any new material that the band will release.

Now, with only a few weeks before the EP is released on September 22nd, the band have given us the first taste, releasing the track ‘Toe To Toes’. A little bit more upbeat and inspiring than the themes touched upon on recent albums, ‘Toe To Toes’ shows Mastodon in fine form, proving that even their studio outtakes are bloody brilliant.

While there’s no word yet on whether or not Mastodon are set to come back to Australia for the first time since 2015 to show off this new music, we can only hope that the group will remember their legions of dedicated Aussie fans soon.

Check out Mastodon’s ‘Toe To Toes’ below, from their new EP Cold Dark Place, due to be released on September 22nd.
