Formed in Alabama in 2009, Brittany Howard & co.’s fierce, soul-infused rock n’ roll exploded onto the music scene introducing us to Alabama Shakes. Their killer performance at CMJ Festival 2011, in New York City earned them a glowing review from the New York Times describing the band as “a thunderbolt dressed in bluejeans,” with music that’s “aching when it’s slow and growling and whooping when it’s fast. Their debut album ‘Boys & Girls was released in Australia in April this year, receiving rave reviews and now Alabama Shakes are heading our way for the Big Day Out 2013 and only two sideshows!

Brittany and Heath took some time out to program our mixtape, so here’s a little taste of the songs they really dig!

Sly and the Family Stone – Hot fun in the Summertime

I had never heard a progression like this before and the structure inspires me tostretch my imagination every time I hear it. Its so unusual and brilliant!

Diamond Rugs – Blue Mountains

Most catchy and difficult sing along melody ever. Love the lyrics to this one. Straight up and down rocknroll.

Cheeseburger – Dirby Day

Its always been a goal of mine to ride in a helicopter. I picked this track out as my helicopter ride soundtrack because its awesome. Let that speak for itself.

C.W. Stoneking – Jungle Lullaby

Britt let me hear this guy and I loved it. Ive been listening to a lot of Louis Armstrong lately, and it’s cool to hear someone do a similar thing to Louis today. Ifthis came out in the 30’s it would be taught today in music appreciation.

Hurray for the Riff Raff – Little Black Star

Such a great track from our friends from New Orleans. They know how to fill a dance floor!

The Human Beinz – Nobody But Me

This should be in every DJ’s arsenal!
