Following on from the first lineup announcement for UK music festival The Great Escape, which featured a handful of Aussie talent in its midst, another 100 bands have been added to the lineup for the three day music festival’s 2013 bill.

Taking place May 16th-18th across Brighton in over 30 venues, the Great Escape is often hailed as the UK’s answer to SXSW, and similarly to the Austin Texas industry event, who announced a strong Aussie lineup of 40 bands headed their way to the American music industry conference (probably as you read this) for its March kick-off, UK’s Great Escape have revealed more Australian names in the next instalment of its mammoth 2013 lineup.

Sydney nu-beat combo five-piece Deep Sea Arcade will be jetting to Brighton for the event off the back off their successful debut Outlands, and accompanying Australian tour. Our Sydney reviewer noted that, “as with many of their songs, it brings to mind the neo-psychadelic euphoria of The Stone Roses, though swapping that band’s floating detached vocals for energised, gleeful pop hooks.”

Fellow Sydney-siders Jackie Onassis, one of Aussie hip hop’s best kept secrets, are also headed to the Great Escape festival. The pair of Kai and Raph’s blend of  rhymes, beats, and electronica first came to wider attention with the free online release of their Holiday EP, and set to give British audiences a taste of the homegrown take on the hip hop genre.

The Griswolds, the writers of Triple J radio favourite ‘Heart of a Lion’, are also on the bill, set to deliver their colourful take on indie guitar rock to the UK, while  an Aussie band that currently conveniently calls Brighton home will also be making an appearance.

The Melbourne bred Kins, featuring frontman Thomas Savage (formerly of Oh Mercy), issued a few releases and a well-received EP – the brilliantly titled Dancing Back And Forth, Covered In Whip Cream – in Australia before relocating to the UK to record their debut album, and will also be gracing the Great Escape bill.
Last but certainly not least is Jagwar Ma. Featuring the production and vocals of former Lost Valentinos member Jono Ma (who happens to be good mates with Foals), Jagwar Ma have taken a turn to a more Madchester-influenced sound, as evidenced in epic new single ‘The Throw’, that is sure to warm up to British audiences.“Which brings the Australian tally to 18 names that will grace the UK event, now in its eight year and has a strong reputation for discovering and ‘breaking’ new talent.”

Jagwar Ma, Deep Sea Arcade, Jackie Onassis, Kins, and The Griswolds join the Aussie acts already set to fly the flag for their country as part of this year’s Great Escape festival.

Namely, Hungry Kids of Hungary – making their second appearance at the festival – Unearthed High winners Snakadaktal, sisters rock act Stonefield, Brisbane’s 12-piece garage pop outfit Velicoraptor, and fellow Brisbane dwellers, the Thomas Calder-fronted five-piece The Trouble with Templeton.

There’s also solo folk-electro artist Caitlin Park, Melbourne acts Dune and Neighbourhood Youth, plus Sydney post-rock instrumental act Sleepmakeswaves, fellow prog-leaning five-piece Awaken I Am, South Australian sister outfit Echo And The Empress, raucous quartet The Upskirts, and Sydney dream-pop band Made In Japan.

Which brings the Australian tally to 18 names that will grace the UK event, now in its eight year and has a strong reputation for discovering and ‘breaking’ new talent, with past headliners including the likes of Adele, The xx, Alabama Shakes, and Alt-J, who all went on to extraordinary things.

The man responsible for booking the Great Escape lineup is Martin Elbourne, who was named Adelaide’s Thinker in Residence last year in a stint hoped to revive its music scene.

Also the chief booker for the iconic UK festival Glastonbury and Great Escape, Elbourne has been working with the Premier’s office to overcome planning and licensing issues that have plagued Adelaide’s live music scene in a number of consultations taking place on separate visits down under in the last six months.

The Glastonbury and Great Escape booker obviously took a shining to Australia’s domesetic talent during his trips, which included a vist to Brisbane music industry conference BIGSOUND last September, where he was also featured as one of the event’s many guest speakers.

“The core aim of TGE is to champion new music, and it’s great to be in a position where we can give festival goers an exciting cross-section of new artists to engage with,” says Festival Director, Kat Morris. It’s hoped that big things are also on the cards for our local talent featuring on the 2013 bill.

The Director is also excited to announce that the legendary Billy Bragg will be taking to the Brighton Dome stage in 2013 to gift audiences his 30-year strong catalogue of impassioned music, including his latest release Tooth & Nail.

“With my new band and new sounding record, I feel as excited now as I did when my first album Life’s A Riot with Spy vs Spy came out all those years ago,” says Bragg. “So it’s brilliant to be invited to play at The Great Escape alongside such a great roster of new acts. I’m really looking forwardto coming back to the Brighton Dome too – I’ve always had such a brilliant time there.”

Running alongside the festival is The Great Escape convention, which saw over 3,000 delegates from over 25 countries attending in 2012. This year’s event will be no different in scale, with industry insight through talks, panel debates, networking sessions, and interviews for industry professionals and music business fans.

Great Escape has already an exciting list of keynote speakers, including Arts Council England Chief Executive Alan Davey, Co-Owner of Rough Trade Retail Stephen Godfroy  as well as chats with some of the most admired managers in the businees – including Brian Message (Radiohead and Nick Cave) and Garry Blackburn (Madness) with more to be announced soon.
