From DMA’s to Jagwar Ma, Australia has recently seen a wave of bands who take heavy inspiration from the UK bands of yore, whether it be from the Madchester baggy scene of the 1980s or the day excessive heights of early ’90s Britpop.

Well, Sydney’s Green Buzzard are the latest band to ride that mighty wave and they might just be the best to come along yet. They were so good, in fact that I OH YOU’s Johann Ponniah decided to sign them after just hearing a few demos.

“It’s funny how people discover music these days. You can trawl the internet searching through countless blogs, you can listen to every bloody podcast you can get your hands on… or, if you’re lucky I guess, you could just sit around and wait until a mate shows you some demos he’s been working on,” he writes.

“Earlier this year a good friend of mine flicked me a Soundcloud link to around 10 or so tracks he’d recorded with a few mates at a farm on the outskirts of Bathurst, under the moniker ‘Green Buzzard’. I immediately became hooked – and today it’s with great pleasure we announce that Green Buzzard have signed to I OH YOU and we welcome them to family.”

“Along with this we’re very excited to let you know that the band will be releasing their debut, double a-side vinyl 7” on August 21 through I OH YOU (the first taste of which you can find below). We’re also happy to announce that the fantastic NYC-based tastemaker label Mermaid Avenue/Mom+Pop will be releasing the 7” in the USA.”

The band will play their first ever show on Friday, 17th July at The Civic Hotel in Sydney to celebrate the release of their very first single, ‘Zoo Fly’, which you can check out below. It sounds like an amalgam of the best of ’80s and ’90s British rock, but with a quintessentially Aussie flavour.
