New Navy’s bags are packed and the gps is locked, loaded and pointed in the direction of your nearest “regular town” to enjoy the release of their new single.
After their hugely successful debut EP, ‘Uluwatu’, featuring singles Zimbabwe and Tapioca, New Navy saw themselves shoot to 5th most played on triple J for the year and #67 in the Triple J hottest 100. After getting back to work in Sydney’s REC studio’s, New Navy are ready to launch the brand new single ‘Regular Town’.

In the last year the band has toured alongside The Whitest Boy Alive, Metronomy, The Presets, Midnight Juggernaughts, Wolfmother, Hermitude, Flume, Van She and Flight Facilities. During this time they also managed to release a version of Telepopmusik’s ‘Breathe’, achieving a huge 180K plays on soundcloud, whilst garnering appreciation from the original artist over twitter.

Bringing all the wild vibes of their percussion driven live set (crowd stage invasions included), New Navy are psyched to once again be bringing the party to your place.

You guys are doing a national tour in March in support of your new single ‘Regular Town’, should we expect to see that song on an EP or an album anytime soon?

There is a really good chance of that. We have a big bundle of tracks we have been working on over the last 12 months, and Regular Town was just one we particularly wanted to record because it seemed to always put a smile on people faces. Since then we have probably developed our sound a fair bit, which naturally happens, so its hard to tell whether Regular Town fits in with the rest of the tracks we plan to record, we’ll just have to wait and see!

Tell us about ‘Regular Town’, what is the song about and what inspired it?

‘Regular Town’ is a broken love song, I guess.  A kind of Romeo and Juliet type deal, two different people from two different places struggling to make their relationship work because of these differences.   I suppose it’s about following your heart, and not trying too hard to be cool.

How does your newer material differ from that of your Ulluwatu EP?

That EP was written a while back, and since then we have had a bunch of new journeys and experiences that inevitably influence our new tracks. As you can imagine, touring around Australia has meant some pretty incredible times (check our instagram for some incriminating evidence) and the new songs certainly look to capture those moments. There is also some more ‘maturity’ in our new songs, without steering too far away from the fun summery bops we love.

Ulluwatu was released back in 2011, how much of 2012 did you spend working on new material?

We’re always writing new stuff, throwing ideas around. Its just a constant evolving process where someone will have an idea and that will get sent around with other members adding to it along the way, so it kind of never stops.

You’ve kept your fans waiting a little bit for new songs, were you guys taking your time deliberately?

Not deliberately, I think we may just be on ‘Island time’! New Navy has definitely been a really big part of our lives over the last twelve month as we spent a lot of time playing shows last year, then worked really hard to reinterpret Telepopmusik’s Breathe whilst writing new material for the new record. There were definitely some hurdles along the way, but we got through them pretty well and have always felt things are moving in a positive direction.

Lyrically are there any common themes in your new material?

Losing love, finding love, escapism, the ocean, pretty girls, growing up, finding you, partying, sleeping in.

I guess these can be tied together with a theme, all of these things happen when you’re on a holiday.  Our music is not only an escape for our listeners, it’s our escape too, from our regular lives.

How do you think audiences are going to react to your new songs?

Only time will tell.  I hope they like them, there will be some definite changes which usually will upset some people, but we’d like our audiences to grow and change with us.

Your latest tour is taking in all major cities as well as Byron Bay and South Gippsland for the Hills Are Alive Festival, what can we expect from those shows?

You can expect some fun party vibes. Awkward dancing, party shirts, a shit tonne of percussion, babes, beers, good times.

If you could collaborate with any other Australian artists, who would that be and why?

Flume. No wait, we did that already.

Umm… Barry Gibb. That would be epic.

He can sing like a Theremin, and can write hits like Paul McCartney. What more do you want?

What are your plans for the rest of 2013?

Once this tour is done and dusted, we’ll be in lock down working hard in the studio.  So the next time you hear from us we’ll have a bunch more songs behind us. And then, tour, tour, tour, tour.

Where we can see you play next, what releases do you have available and where can we get them?

We’ll be celebrating the release of Regular Town at The Northcote Social for a matinee show on Sunday the 24th March. Supported by Melbourne band Sons et al.
