In further proof that Dave Grohl is a complete workaholic that may actually never rest (or has perfected cloning), the Foo Fighter/surviving Nirvana member/star drummer for hire/SXSW 2013 keynote speaker/’nicest man in rock’ has landed an exclusive worldwide publishing deal off the back of his directorial debut, Sound City: Real To Reel – the all-star rockumentary about the titular LA recording studio.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last few months, you’ve likely heard of Grohl’s movie, which screens for one night only to Australian audiences on Thursday 31st January, and also features a jaw-dropping guest list of star interviewees including Neil Young, Tom Petty, John Fogerty, Frank Black, Lindsey Buckingham, Rick Rubin, Lars Ulrich, and many more.

Many of those same big music names feature on the all-star soundtrack and as Music-News reports, Grohl has inked a deal with Kobalt Music Group to distribute the accompanying Sound City compilation – which features fellow Foo Fighters and Nirvana Members, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, Josh Homme, Trent Reznor, and and that Paul McCartney aided supergroup cut, ‘Cut Me Some Slack’.

The new publishing deal was signed last Tuesday where the Foo Fighters frontman debuted the Sound City movie at the Sundance Film Festival, and under the terms of the agreement, Kobalt Music Group executives will “immediately begin to provide creative and synch services for Sound City: Real To Reel and several other works by Dave.”

Kobalt will begin representing Grohl’s publishing catalogue in 2014, which will include his vast work with Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures (the side-project featuring Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones and QOTSA frontman Josh Homme), as well as Nirvana, who recorded their landmark 1991 album Nevermind at LA’s Sound City Studios.“As a rock musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and film director, vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, Dave is a force and an immense and diverse talent.” – Willard Ahdritz, Kobalt CEO

“As a rock musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and film director, vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, Dave is a force and an immense and diverse talent with a catalogue of amazing songs,” said Kobalt CEO Willard Ahdritz. “We look forward to a long relationship and the new Sound City: Real To Reel album due next month.”

Grohl also helped showboat his new rockumentary, and his enviable music connections, with a recent concert at the Sundance Film Festival from the Sound City Players, a one-off live supergroup featuring Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear, fellow Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, and Chris Shiflett, Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Rick Springfield, Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age), Chris Goss (producer), Rick Neilsen (Cheap Trick), Lee Ving (Fear), Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine), Jessy Greene (Geraldine Fibbers), and the Wallflowers’ Rami Jafee.

In-between hosting a radio series, playing drums on the new Queens of the Stone Age album, speaking at the forthcoming SXSW 2013, as well as his Sound City commitments, it’s no wonder that Foo Fighters are currently on official leave of absence.

Well, technically, considering that all three of Grohl’s bandmates have been along for the Sound City ride.

“It’s funny, we don’t really consider this the Foo Fighters,” Grohl told MTV News. “We’re Rick Springfield’s backing band, we’re john Fogerty’s backing band. We’re not up there playing ‘Everlong’ every night, we’re just hoping our heroes get up on stage and play,” he says.

Grohl also teased that Foo Fighters have begun work on the follow-up to 2011’s Wasting Light. “We know exactly what’s coming next,” saying, “we have really awesome, big plans for the next album… I have the music for the next record and we’re going to start working on it once we finish doing all this stuff.”

It’s Grohl’s world, we’re just living in it.
