They say there’s no rest for the wicked, and the same seems to be true of psychedelic-rockers.

You’d think that with the great successes that both Tame Impala and Pond have seen in the last 12 months they’d be taking the next little while to have a break, take a breath and, revel in their newfound fame.

Not so though with two-fifths of the NME-list topping band being a part of the musical collective that is Pond, (not to mention a huge string of other side projects) recently revealing in an interview with Tone Deaf, that every member of the Perth-outfit would be dropping solo records on the same day.

We were going to do a really nice, beautiful orchestrated album, but we figured we might as well capture the live band as we’ve been touring… So that’s what Hobo Rocket is, the full on, manic acid rock [album].”

Now, just weeks after that monster announcement comes a brand new single from the five-piece titled ‘Giant Tortoise’. Taken from their upcoming record Hobo Rocket the single has already been receiving stellar praise from Pond fans.

Tame Impala’s drummer turned keys man Jay Watson recently revealed that Pond have a swathe of new material ready to be released in the coming months.

“We’re all just recording stuff, Pond records, we’ve done one and we’re doing another one, and solo records and stuff,” says Watson.

He also confirmed that Pond’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed Beard Wives Denim, will be a “full on crazy fiend rock and roll album.

“We were going to do a really nice, beautiful orchestrated album, but we figured we might as well capture the live band as we’ve been touring… So that’s what Hobo Rocket is, the full on, manic acid rock [album].”

Bassist Joe Ryan also revealed in an interview with Tone Deaf last year that the band recorded their latest LP at Fremantle’s Wastleand Studios, “owned by the guys from Eskimo Joe and we did it in three nights,” explains Ryan, describing it as “a pretty sonic album with a lot of feedback and crazy shit,” and we can expect many tracks to be “heavier; more like Earth or one of those kinds of band.

While Watson’s upcoming solo record may surprise fans, with the keys player revealing “it sounds like me, it doesn’t sound like Pond or Tame Impala. Phil Collins on acid, that’s what that sounds like”, the newest cut from Pond stays true to their psych-rock roots.

The band are currently on tour as part of Laneway Festival (Check out some of our snaps of the band in Sydney over the weekend .) and have been trying out some new material including ‘Giant Tortoise’ to receptive audiences.

So when can we expect the full LP? “Both [Hobo Rocket and Watson’s solo album] will be out March or April hopefully, mid-year” reveals Watson with Ryan adding ” It just takes a little while because people need to be satisfied – not us. People we’ve never met need to be satisfied.”
