The results are in for another year of Triple J’s self-described “world’s largest musical democracy.”

After 1,492,619 votes were cast, Melbourne singer-songwriter Vance Joy claimed the top spot in this year’s Hottest 100 with his uke-led track, ‘Riptide’.

The 25-year-old musician beat out strong contenders to reach the #1 position in the annual countdown, pipping Lorde’s ‘Royals’ at #2 to the top spot – one of three tracks from the 17-year-old New Zealand sensation in the Top 20 – and another popular favourite, ‘Get Lucky’ by Daft Punk, who had the most songs on the list with four separate entries.

Vance Joy’s #1 position also led a strong Australian presence on the list as one of 44 Australian artists featured in this year’s Hottest 100, the most of any country, with the US and the UK trailing with 24 and 23 represented acts respectively.

“Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ is a first for the Hottest 100 in a couple of respects,” said Triple J’s Richard Kingsmill of the Hottest 100 result, the first time an Aussie has topped the poll since Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ in 2011.

“We’ve never had a winning song from an artist who is so new that they’ve not even had an album to their name yet. It’s also the first #1 to have been written on a ukulele.” Vance Joy had a second song from its debut five-track EP in the Top 100, with ‘Play With Fire’ scraping in at #95 on the list.

‘Riptide’ was also the #1 prediction of the Warmest 100 after it made a surprise last-minute comeback using a new method to trace social media votes for the Triple J music poll, though with slightly less accuracy than last year’s debut. Failing to accurately predict the #2 and #3 positions from Lorde and Daft Punk.

Interestingly ‘Get Lucky’ was joined in the Top 100 by the cover version of the track by Perth pop rockers San Cisco for Like A Version (at #39), another Hottest 100 first.

It was also one of several Like A Version renditions in this year’s poll, including Something For Kate’s take on the Florence Welch-sung Calvin Harris hit ‘Some Sweet Nothing’ at #68 and Illy’s Ausmusic Month Medley landing at #66.

Meanwhile, The Amity Affliction’s hardcore take on Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born To Die’ came in at #40 while the US neo-chanteuse herself came in at #7 with her ballad from The Great Gatsby, ‘Young And Beautiful.’

Other strong performing international acts included Arctic Monkeys, with three cuts from AM (voted by Triple J Listeners as the Best Album of 2013) in the Top 20, London Grammar’s ‘Strong’ hitting #10 (one of three by the UK trio in the list), and Haim as ‘The Wire’ slotted at #11 (one of three by the LA siblings).

Other strong performing Aussie acts included Flume And Chet Faker, Matt Corby, The Preatures, Violent Soho, and Unearthed act The Kite String Tangle, who all had positions in the Top 20.

Triple J is broadcasting the #101 to #200 results on air today from 10am.
