Damon Albarn and Jamie Murphy as Gorillaz have pulled in some pretty amazing collaborators over the last decade or so – from Lou Reed to Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash, not to mention Shaun Ryder, Mos Def and Bobby Womack; to name just a few. However, if we’re to believe the tabloid rumours, the boys might just have pulled in a collaboration with none other than former Beatle Paul McCartney!

While London’s The Sun is keen to beat up the idea that it may really be happening, the rumours have been further fuelled after McCartney conceded to respected rock music website The Quietus in an interview that he had talked about it with Albarn. Discussing the reissue of his experimental albums McCartney and McCartney II, which held a distinctly prescient electronic vibe, it was suggested to him that one of the songs in particular could have been at home on a Gorillaz record.

Suprisingly, McCartney let the cat out of the bag, telling the interviewer “We have kind of talked. Nothing serious, but I like what they do. I have run into Damon at things and we have talked. It’s got near a couple of times but we never had the time, I suppose…” London’s The Sun also notes that Albarn had presented McCartney with a Q Music Award at a ceremony several years ago, which is apparently where their usual unnamed source says the collaboration first came about.

“Damon originally brought up the idea of doing something with Gorillaz at the Q Awards and they have been trying to sort something since. It never worked out on the last album, Plastic Beach, but things are looking good for something together in the future.”
