Following the success of their 2009 album Only Revolutions, Biffy Clyro are back with their sixth and more emotionally stirring release, Opposites.

One of Britain’s most exciting live bands has come out with an album that highlights their continuing ambition to deliver music that is fresh and catchy, yet unpredictable and varied.

Produced by Garth Richardson (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rage Against The Machine), the record starts out quite slow with ‘Different People’ before kicking into gear with a classic guitar riff that brings listeners back to that classic Biffy Clyro sound.

There is some interesting use of horns in ‘Spanish Radio’ and lyrics that tug at heartstrings in ‘Biblical’, and the album has a good combination of slow-paced numbers (‘Opposites’) and fast-paced tracks that deliver their rocking combination of drums and guitar.

In particular ‘Modern Magic Formula’ and ‘Trumpet Or Trap’, which deliver some of the strongest riffs on the album that could be likened to those of their older, more eccentric work.

Biffy Clyro’s latest LP, though good, is far from anything extremely experimental or different, but rings to the tune of hopeful commercial breakthrough and radio play.

While it’s not the most epic rock album of the year, it is definitely a very strong and clean alterative rock record that showcases Biffy Clyro’s talent.
