Paul McCartney gigs have a tendency to feature some surprises, so it’s understandable that the crowd at his Perth show over the weekend weren’t really sure what to expect apart from a veritable evening of rock hits. As it turns out though, McCartney used his time on stage to prove that “all you need is love” as he helped a young Western Australian couple get engaged.

As Perth Now reports, a young Perth couple by the name of Martin and Saya were in attendance at Paul McCartney’s show at nib Stadium on Saturday night, when the former Beatle saw a sign that Martin was holding. Inviting the couple on stage, McCartney prompted Martin to follow the script and get on his knee so he could propose to Saya.

“I fell in love with you 10 years ago when we met in England on a Contiki tour,” Martin explained to Saya and the sell-out crowd. “And I thought at the end of the tour that, ‘She listens to a lot of The Beatles.”

“I know now that I have the world’s biggest Beatles fan, and it would do me an honour, Saya, if you would take my hand in marriage,” he asked to the rapturous applause of all those in attendance. Thankfully, Saya said yes, so we’re able to report about this as a heartwarming story, which is always preferable.

Paul McCartney’s Perth show, and his first in the country in almost a quarter of a century, was easily a well-received venture, featuring a 40-song setlist that consisted of various hits from The Beatles, Wings, and even McCartney’s solo work.

McCartney is set to continue his Aussie tour with a trip to Melbourne tomorrow night, before further shows in Brisbane and Sydney. If you missed out on tickets though, the rock legend did tell the Perth crowd that he plans to come back, so let’s hope we’re not forced to wait another 24 years.
