Let’s be fair, in the world of music you very rarely expect to see a band’s music inspire a ballet, but then again, there are very few bands who have had the sort of influence that Radiohead has had.

As Pitchfork reports, the Nederlands Dans Theater has just premiered their newest piece, a ballet inspired by the works of Radiohead.

The ballet, entitled Proof, was choreographed by Edward Clug as his first piece for the Nederlands Dans Theater and is part of their touring program Side A: Split Into One.

While some may deride this ballet for being a flimsy attempt to make contemporary dance appealing to the kids, according to Edward Clug, it was a labour of love, and a way for him to express his fondness for the legendary alt-rock group. “Radiohead is more than just my favourite band,” Clug said. “They are the soundtrack to my other side; listening to them feels like I’m finding a self that I haven’t met yet.”

The Nederlands Dans Theater has also released a few videos of the performance, which you can check out below. While it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it still seems like this is the best dancing that Radiohead fans have seen since the band showcased Thom Yorke’s erratic dancing in the ‘Lotus Flower’ clip.

While it’s rather hard to have imagined back in 1992 that the group who sang the words “I wish I was special, you’re so fucking special” would one day be the subject of a ballet in the Netherlands. If anything, it just goes to show that time makes fools of us all. Frankly, we’re looking forward to seeing what sort of dances will be choreographed for Dune Rats’ inevitable ballet in 2042.
