Tyron here from THE RECHORDS, for those uninitiated we’re a trio based in Melbourne and our music is steeped in the roots of Americana but certainly not limited to those confines.  The three of us have had a passion and appreciation for early roots music from the 30’s through to the 60’s and this has influenced our own song writing with the odd current day reference here and there.  We don’t write about the typical Hot Rods or Pinup Girls nor do we write about things that don’t relate to us…..and as for the songs that we do cover, it’s usually because they have some significance whether it be a killer riff, great harmony vocal line or quirky lyrics that just hook us in. For those thinking it’s just another Rockabilly band that only a specific type of appropriately dressed punter would dig….then think again, you would be surprised I’m sure, you’ll never know until you come to a show. ;)

In fact, keep an eye out this Thursday Night (9th of May) between 8:15pm-8:30pm on the Marngrook Footy Show (NITV – Free-to-air or Foxtel) and you’ll get to see the band perform ‘LIVE’ for our first ever National TV appearance.  Just to give you a taste of what to expect.

Do you recall the moment you decided you had to play music and who inspired you to start?

For me it was when a couple of close friends who were already playing in bands, asked me if I’d join them to form a new band…..problem was, I didn’t play any instruments nor sung, so one of them taught me electric bass and as they say….”the rest is history”.  And that was back around 1992-ish.  I’d always enjoyed music but hadn’t actually pictured myself playing in a band.

You must answer this question honestly. What and where was the first gig you went to?

Man, I have no idea….that was way too many year ago….and that’s the honest truth.  It could have been in Brisbane seeing The Convertibles, the premier Rockabilly band in Qld in the late 80’s / early 90’s but I really don’t know, I don’t have a good memory for those times in my life.

You’re about to launch your new EP ‘It Won’t Be Long’, who produced the record and where was it recorded?

We acquired the assistance of music producer, Lindsay Gravina from Birdland Studios in Prahran to see what he could get out of this little Hillbilly trio of ours and with the awesomeness of knob twiddling from Rob Long, the Engineer, we produced this little EP. We thought that Lindsay had some great credentials working with the likes of Jet, Jebadiah, Stonefield, early Living End, etc. so we were interested to see how he would handle our music.

What’s on heavy rotation on your iPod right now?

What’s an iPod?  I’ve got a great Vinyl album spinning on my turntable right now from a Spanish Garage Rock’n’Roll trio called ‘Doctor Explosion’….yeah, don’t let the name fool ya they are awesome!

You’re taking off to Europe not long after you have launched the EP, what is taking you to Europe?

Hopefully a bloody big plane!….but seriously, this will be our second tour back to Europe, we originally went in 2011 and had a great response so we had some interest for us to return and the folks were so friendly and accommodating that we couldn’t resist so off we go again from the 22nd of may till 11th of June, 2013.

If you could curate your own festival, where would it be, who would be on the bill, how many people would you let in and what features would it have?

Wow…..how do I answer that in under 2000 words?  Firstly I wouldn’t curate my own…..it’s way too much work, so I’d get some other folk to organise it for me.  I’d suggest it to be on a Private tropical island somewhere warm…..it would have the best selection of Bluegrass, 60’s Garage, early R&B and good old fashion Rock’n’Roll acts from all over the world….but I’d limit it to just 15 bands, don’t know why I just would?  I’d let in only those who truly dig and appreciate these genres….hmmm…no more than 200 lucky punters of course a big percentage would be female ;)

There would be no other attractions……it’s just all about the music (maybe some Tapas and plenty of smooth Bourbon and Sailor Jerry Rum (only rum I’ll drink).

Because it’s more fun to do things together, which living Australian artist would you most like to collaborate with?

I reckon it could be fun to mix it up with the likes of Paul Kelly as he’s a great songwriter or even Joe Camilleri because of his early musical history in relation to Rockabilly & Roots. I’m sure there are a bunch of others I could think of too.

What is your band’s music the best soundtrack for?

An awesome life! Hahahaha….

What’s your favourite piece of ReChords merch?

Well, I think it’s about to be produced…..stay tuned for that one folks!

Why should we not miss your Melbourne EP Launch on Saturday 11th May at The Workers Club?

Because…..it will be our ONLY Melbourne EP Launch and a rare occasion to see us perform with a Drummer thanks to Sue Shaw (The Exotics, Girl Monster, Fruit Jar). Plus the fact we will have two awesome bands helping us out on the night, The Drey Rollan Band all the way down from Sydney who have been getting a bit of attention themselves around the traps up north and our local compadres, Cherrywood, who have been knocking them dead back here in Melbourne with their Bar-room Country Punk. Plus….the first 50 punters through the doors from 8:30pm get a FREE copy of our new EP…..why wouldn’t you want to come?
