Following on from the tragic and untimely death of legendary rock musician Chris Cornell over a week ago, a private funeral service has been held in Los Angeles to farewell the rock star, attended by some of Cornell’s closest musical friends.

As The Associated Press reports, Cornell was laid to rest during a memorial service which focused equally on his musical achievements and his love of family and friends. Tom Morello, guitarist for Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, spoke in his eulogy that “Chris was as melodic as The Beatles, as rocking as Sabbath and as haunting as Edgar Allan Poe.”

A number of Cornell’s musical contemporaries, collaborators, and admirers were in attendance as well, including Soundgarden bandmates Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron, Temple Of The Dog bandmate Jeff Ament, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, and Pat Smear, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, Alice In Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, as well as Courtney Love, Pharrell Williams, and actors Brad Pitt and Christian Bale.

Actor Josh Brolin, and Soundgarden bandmates Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron also delivered eulogies at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery service, while Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington also performed a cover of Leonard Cohen’s classic track ‘Hallelujah’.
