Legendary Seattle grunge label Sub Pop which was instrumental in developing the “Seattle sound” with bands such as Mudhoney, and most famously Nirvana, have signed their first ever Australian band last night.

Indie folk four-piece Husky who hail from Melbourne have been wooed by the label according to Mess+Noise and join Sub Pop’s roster of artists including Fleet Foxes, Dinosaur Jr., Foals, Beach House, The Postal Service, and Flight of the Conchords.

“Sub Pop is enamored with the Melbourne quartet, Husky,” says President of Sub Pop and co-founder Jonathan Poneman. “The band’s strength rests in its infectious, evocative songs and stirring live performances.”

As part of the deal Husky’s debut album, Forever So, will be released Stateside on July 10th. Husky will also be celebrating by hitting the international touring circuit throughout February and March. Following on from their appearances at Laneway Festival, the band will tour alongside German duo BOY throughout Germany and then perform at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Canadian Music Week and in New York City and LA.

We caught up with the band last year on the eve of the release of Forever So to talk about their unorthodox approach to recording the album. “We built a studio into the house,” keyboardist Gideon Press told us. “And the bungalow was where we did a lot of the listening to the recordings, and a lot of the writing of the songs.”

“We partitioned different bits of the house off, and that was where we would record a lot of the vocals and guitars and different instruments,” he continued. “We were pretty clear with the ideas and concepts we wanted in the album, and we didn’t want a producer telling us how to do thing. Having our own studio meant we could…be scrupulous about everything in that album, and put in the time in.”
