Drummer for local rockers Superheist, John Sankey, has lashed out fiercely at the “spineless prick” who glassed him during a set at Brisbane’s Brightside last weekend, describing the assault as an act of “blatant fucking stupidity”.

As The Music reports, Sankey posted a vitriolic message to Facebook fans the day after the incident, detailing his disgust at the act, while thanking his bandmembers and other fans for their support.

“About half way through our set I noticed an object coming towards me from the crowd,” Sankey told fans. “My first thought was it’s a water bottle or plastic cup, in a split second it hit me and I realized it was a fucking glass!

“I finished the song, threw my sticks down and stormed offstage, shocked and obviously very pissed off! Not surprisingly the spineless prick who threw it didn’t own up and hid like a bitch.”

The understandably livid drummer went on to descibe the act as “blatant fucking stupidity”, adding that the perpetrator “need to be taught a lesson” and that the band are actively trying to track them down.

“If it wasn’t for the other guys in the band there’s no way I would have walked back on that stage last night,” he continues. “I was fucking done with it but I didn’t want to let them down so I agreed to finish the show.

“We are hoping to get video footage and find out who the piece of shit was who threw the glass, if anyone knows speak up. If you think it’s cool to put an artist onstage in danger you need a severe reality check and you definitely aren’t fucking welcome at a Superheist show, ever!

“To all the other fans who were there last night we thank you all and appreciate the support.”

In a calmer statement given to The Music today, he described it as “a blatant act of assault that is inexcusable in any situation,” adding that having something like this occur while they were just trying to perform their jobs is “a complete disgrace”.

“Thankfully I wasn’t seriously injured but it could have been a lot worse!” he adds. “In over 20 years of playing music all around the world I’ve never seen such a lowlife coward act, it makes me sick.”

He informed them that The Brightside staff are actively investigating the attack, and gave the venue his full backing.

“I’ve since been contacted by the venue management a number of times and they are being very pro-active going through video footage and interviewing staff to do all they can to find the person responsible.

“The last thing I want to see is any negativity towards an establishment that supports live music, they are the foundation of our industry and I want to stress The Brightside have been nothing but helpful and are as appalled as I am about this situation.

Despite the disgusting incident, Sankey and the band remain undeterred as they carry on with the rest of the tour, starting with Sydney this Friday night.

“Any artist who gets onstage deserves respect and above all awareness for the safety of bands and patrons should be paramount, just like in any other workplace.

“Fuck you to the asshole who did this, as for the rest of us the show must continue so see you all back onstage real soon.”
