Runners in the annual Sydney City2Surf event were today treated with a special performance by some rock royalty, as irreverent Aussie rockers You Am I performed a free live rooftop show at Sydney’s The Sheaf hotel.

Located in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs, The Sheaf had been teasing a free live performance for the last 24 hours, with music fans keen to see who would be belting out the tunes. Earlier today, the hotel confirmed that You Am I were set to be performing a free, one-hour set on The Sheaf’s rooftop – prime position to help soundtrack the annual City2Surf race for close to 80,000 participants.

True to his style, the ever-jovial Tim Rogers stated that “We have tried, through dishwashing and carpet cleaning to pay off a bar tab, however it has been a Sisyphean ordeal. Hence, our little group will attempt to square the ledger by performing cult hits from the first floor awning.”

Of course, the very nature of playing to a moving crowd meant that not everyone got to hear the songs they wanted to hear. As one fan called out to request their 1995 hit ‘Jewels And Bullets’, Tim Rogers responded by plainly stating “We just played it dude, if you were a little faster, you would’ve heard it.”

The Sheaf were kind enough to also livestream the event, and share a few photos of the legendary Sydney rockers belting out their hits, so be sure to check out their Facebook page to get an idea of just how awesome this surprise gig was.

You Am I are set to return to Sydney again on August 31st when they play with Hoodoo Gurus, Jebediah, and Magic Dirt’s Adalita at the Enmore Theatre, as part of the travelling Fist Full Of Rock tour. If this rooftop gig has left you feeling jealous, then you’d best find yourself a ticket to that amazing show when it comes around.
