If you’ve looked at Aussie music any time in the last year or two, you would have had to try pretty hard not to come across Tash Sultana’s name. The young Melbourne muso has been cranking out tune after tune and touring relentlessly around the world for the last couple of years, but as she nears the end of her current touring schedule, Tash has opened up about what she plans to do after.

Back in October, Tash Sultana spoke to triple j’s Ben and Liam and stated that she is planning to take a small hiatus after her current Aussie shows. “I do this run and then the Aussie run and then I’m going to go on a little bit of a hiatus and do some different kind of stuff. I think it’s time – it’s been two years now,” she said.

Now, Tash has spoken to triple j again, outlining her plans for the future and talking about how wild the last few years have been. “This is coming to the end of a crazy rollercoaster that, to be honest, there was points I did not think I was going to get through the other side but here we are,” Tash said.

“I’ve changed so much. At the start, I guess I was quite social and down for the party, wherever the party was… Now I don’t drink or anything and am very, very healthy and I sleep a lot. It’s kind of funny, you can’t do that many shows and try to party like a rockstar.”

However, the happenings in the last year, which include touring around the world, appearing on US TV, and being forced to cancel some shows due to health issues, have caused Tash Sultana to step back and take a look at the cost of this constant touring.

“I’ve learnt this lesson myself in the last couple of months because I’ve been really sick and just had to cancel heaps of shows and tours and go home and get better, spend some time in a health lodge because I’ve pretty much just started losing grip on reality,” she said.

“Now I’m feeling great and every day, so far, has been really awesome on the other side of all that shit and it’s just made me realise, you step on these big stages in front of all these beautiful people and after that you just go home to yourself, your partner, and your dog and it’s a pretty crazy contrast, which one is more important? Or are they just as important?”

“I don’t know I’m 22 so I want to do a lot with my life, I’m obviously always going to do music but I also just want to disappear for a bit at some point too.”

Of course, don’t start fretting just yet, because Tash still has a number of Aussie dates planned (including an appearance at Bluesfest next year), and has promised that her debut album is still on the way. So while it sounds like Tash Sultana will be stepping back from everything she’s created, there’s still plenty of fuel left in the tank for this brilliant Aussie talent.
