For whatever reason, at the 1994 Lollapalooza festival, MTV decided to have Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan interview Australian music legend Nick Cave instead of sending one of their regular interviewers.

Presumably, the producers were concerned about the potential HR ramifications of having one of their interviewers eviscerated by Cave’s piercing gaze before his necromancy powers unleash an army of the dead and destroy expensive camera equipment.

Instead, Corgan was chosen as a sacrifice and things were slightly less awkward than the preposterous fantasy sequence we just suggested. For starters, Corgan made something of a tactical error in referring to Cave’s band as English.

To be fair, it was clear from the start that Nick Cave had no interest in being interviewed and was a little hard on young lad Billy Corgan, who was just doing MTV a favour. Then again, the results are absolutely hilarious. Enjoy them below.
