The Rubens, in addition to being this year’s triple j Hottest 100 winners and a swiftly rising property on the international live music scene, are also pretty clever. And what’s the mark of a clever person? Someone that surrounds themselves with clever people.

That’s just what the band did for their new music video for ‘Cut Me Loose’. More specifically, they surrounded themselves with hilarious and surreal people in Australian music veteran and self-deprecator extraordinaire SPOD and the equally comical The Meeting Tree.

SPOD directed the video in which The Meeting Tree star alongside a 3D-rendered baby, bikini-clad girls, and some bananas, though there’s not a single appearance from, y’know, The Rubens. And no, we’re not quite sure just what the video is supposed to be about.

“Life, an endless relay of terror that you cope with by banking on those moments that you define yourself by, hoping to quell the existential angst of existence & the vague horror of being hunted by time,” SPOD told Pedestrian.tv of the clip.

“Only there lies more terror, of underperforming, not reaching your potential, lazily repeating yourself or even worse, disappointing people. But the sweet payoff when you get a small glimpse of the warm glow of creative satisfaction quickly dissolves back into the black abyss of Life, an endless relay of terror, banking on those moments.”
