As we get close to the two-year anniversary of The Rubens doing the seemingly-impossible and topping the triple j Hottest 100 with the infectious ‘Hoops’, the Menangle boys have returned with a brand new single, ‘Million Man’.

It’s been just over two years now since we last received new music from The Rubens, with the group having released their sophomore album, Hoops, back in August of 2015. Now, the band have just released the first taste of album number three.

Premiering on triple j this morning, ‘Million Man’ is the first single from The Rubens’ third album, which is set to drop sometime in 2018.

Having been recorded in an old World War II bunker in Sydney, ‘Million Man’ sees the band team up with Wilder Zoby and ‘Lil Shalimar (aka Torbitt Schwartz), best known as producers/collaborators for Run The Jewels.

“When it came time to look for a producer for this new record, we realised that they’d be the perfect guys to work with,” said keyboardist Elliott Margin.

“‘Million Man’ was the first track we worked on in the studio with the boys. It was genuinely just a fun time building the song and being creative together.

“The song itself kind of came from nowhere, just sitting at the piano and playing whatever came out,” Elliott continued. “As the song developed, the lyrics slowly came and spelled out a story and the rest came from there. The chorus was an easy flowing one, which is rare.”

Check out The Rubens’ brand new single below. Do you reckon it’s got the same sort of power behind it to see the band top the triple j Hottest 100 once again? Only time will tell, but if we’re sure of one thing, it’s that they haven’t lost that knack for crafting a brilliant tune.
