Triple J’s ratings have soared according to the results of the first metropolitan radio survey for 2014 especially in Sydney where the ABC youth broadcaster have overtaken commercial titans Triple M and 2Day FM.

The new ratings report, the first from GfK after replacing traditional surveys reporters Neilsen, shows Triple J gaining a boost in popularity in its weekend programming across Australia, but had mixed responses on weekdays in differing states, as The Music reports.

But Triple J’s large audience gains in Sydney are more attributable to 2Day FM losing breakfast radio hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie-O to KIIS fm, seeing their audience ratings almost halved, as the Music Network details.

Melbourne ratings also saw Triple J’s figures rise, (1.7% on weekends and 0.5% on weekdays), coming second in its key demographic of 18-24 just behind Nova. The station is ahead of Nova however up in Brisbane, where Triple J is also the second most popular station on weekends (up 2%) and in Adelaide (weekends up 2.6%), though in both states there was a drop in weekday ratings.

Over in Perth – where Triple J became the #1 rated station, for the first time ever, last year – the station continued to exhibit an impressive ratings hold, up 0.9% on weekdays and up 2.9% on weekends, though they move to second place just behind Mix 94.5, but still dominate in the 25-35 demographic with a share of 25.6%.
