Metallica have been on tour for over nine months now, so they need to keep finding new and novel ways to keep the mood light, lest they slide into another Some Kind Of Monster-style funk again.

A few weeks back, they invited a cute little girl onstage to drum for a portion of a ‘Seek and Destroy’ (a favourite of eight year olds), and earlier this week in Pasadena they kicked into ‘Runnin’ With The Devil’ as a tribute to Van Halen, who are from the area.

“That’s our little homage to the Pasadena boys, all right?” Hetfield asked after they played a verse and chorus. “Sorry you had to put up with that! That wasn’t too bad, that was kind of fun,” he said – and he have to agree.

I’m quite enjoying Metallica as a ‘fun’ day these days, being wacky on late night shows, teaming up with Gaga, jovially taking part in dumb radio quizzes, darkness no longer imprisoning them…
