We all know winning the triple j Hottest 100 is better than winning an ARIA Award, or so says Australian music industry icon Michael Gudinski after The Rubens took out the highly coveted top spot in the world’s biggest fan-voted music poll.

But what’s in it for triple j, the ones who make it all happen? Well, the latest radio ratings survey may just have the answers. The first survey of 2016 dropped earlier this week, looking at the period between Sunday, 17th January and Saturday, 27th February 2016.

As Radio Info notes, this periods includes high-traffic events like the cricket and the Hottest 100 on Australia Day, when you can bet that pretty much every backyard BBQ is tuning into our national youth broadcaster in eager anticipation of that number one.

According to stats released by triple j ahead of this year’s countdown, some 2,094,350 votes were cast by 298,851 voters from 172 countries around the world and 16,000 songs were voted for. Furthermore, 54 percent of the songs in this year’s Hottest 100 were by homegrown artists.

Unsurprisingly, the countdown resulted in very healthy ratings for the station, which absolutely dominated the valuable (and youthful) 18-24 demographic in three of the five major cities tallied – Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.

Readers can check out the full results of this year’s first Australian radio ratings survey below. Considering the ratings explosion it created for the station, it’s not surprising every artist in the country is always itching for votes.
