Gotye has cast doubts on whether he will ever release a follow-up to 2011’s hugely successful Making Mirrors, which yielded the Melbourne songwriter’s biggest hit, Somebody That I Used to Know. In a recent post to his online newsletter, Gotye, real name Wally De Backer, writes, “There will be no new Gotye music.”

“Wait, maybe there will be,” he continues. “I’m not entirely sure right now. There are many contingencies.” According to De Backer, one of his concerns is “the continued human capacity for sound perception”.

“If the world gets noisier at the present rate, and instances of early-onset deafness rise correspondingly, and I release my magnus opus in a format that requires the generation and amplification of sound waves via some form of audio reproduction technology in order to be perceptible, will anybody hear this work?” he muses.

“I don’t know. But I think about these things,” the hit-maker and Grammy Award winner continues. He concludes by assuring his fans, “One thing you can count on: I will do my best to make it enjoyable for both of us.”

De Backer’s comments come after reports he’s been hard at work with producer Nick Launay (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire, and Nick Cave) and regular collaborator Franc Tetaz on a new Gotye album, which the songwriter told Triple J is slated for release some time in 2015.

“I’ve been tracking down specific sounds for these song concepts I have,” he told The Doctor. “It’s taking a while, as is my way. I really hope I’d be mixing a new Gotye record by the end of the year, hopefully have the songs together first thing next year.”

According to De Backer’s newsletter, he is still working on new music with his band, The Basics, which the trio have been busy recording at London’s iconic Abbey Road Studios.
