To people in England, wombats are probably just thought of as some nondescript creatures from the outback, well down on a list of famous Aussie animals that includes such oddities as the kanga, koala, and platypus.

But clearly the UK outfit who adopted the rotund things as their namesake have a true love for them, on full display as The Wombats treated Sydney’s Opera House to an impromptu dance number featuring actual wombats.

Well, okay, not actual wombats, but definitely something that looked a lot more like them than an ageing British indie band. As it turns out, two members of the dance troupe actually included triple j’s breakfast presenters Ben and Liam, who posted footage of the gig earlier today, alongside a pic of the duo suiting up.

To be honest, the hastily-sewn costumes make it look more like a teddy bear picnic than a parade of wombats, but we’ll give them points for trying – even if this might make any U.K. fans who see it question what a wombat actually looks like.

No word yet on whether the new members will make their way to the final gig of the tour in Perth tomorrow night, or the last stop of Groovin The Moo this Saturday.

Head bangin’ in Wombat suits with super fan Mel. Thanks for a great night @wombatsofficial
