Yes, yes, it’s quite easy to laugh at Tom DeLonge for his obsession with aliens.

But he has held steady in his interest and research for decades, schooling a sincerely-interested Larry King, befriending operatives at the CIA, and generally sitting on the sane side of a pretty insane topic. For example, as he explains in this in-depth interview on Spacing Out: most UFO sightings aren’t crazy people in fields drinking moonshine, but in fact people seeing actual, classified aircraft being tested by the U.S government for future war scenarios.

However, it’s hard not to assume you’re reading a lazy Onion-esque article when Hollywood Reporter breaks the news that DeLonge is directing, producing, and writing a sci-fi film about a group of ne’er-do-well skater punks from San Diego who decide to start investigating weird paranormal activity in their town.

“I grew up in Southern California as a disaffected young skateboarder who broke the occasional law or five”, DeLonge explains. “I was always dreaming about the world around me, obsessively looking for the more unusual and imaginative experiences that life has to offer.

“That’s the inspiration behind Strange Times [oh yeah, that’s the name of the film] which is about the tribe of broken youth and the restless spirit that inspired me to form Blink-182 and seek out adventure.”

In addition, DeLonge’s band Angels & Airwaves will produce the soundtrack, and we’re sincerely hoping there’s a song called ‘The Tribe of Broken Youth’, ‘cos that’s a great title for a song.

And no, we’re not going to embed the ‘Aliens Exist’ video below – that’d be too obvious.
