Jimmy Barnes’ legacy is now immortalised in the world of visual arts, with a portrait of the Cold Chisel frontman taking out this year’s Packing Room Archibald Prize.

The portrait, painted by Jamie Preisz shows Barnes posing as a title fighter strapping his hands, and came in on the first-day entries were open.

Preisz explained the inspiration behind painting Jimmy came from the idea that he’s more than justs a rock musician, but encompasses the cultural psyche of the nation as a whole. Barnes expressed his love of the portrait, saying it showed he was “prepared to fight for love, friends and family.

The Packing Room Prize is valued at $1500, however, it’s often referred to as the “kiss of death” as no winner has ever gone on to win the top prize.
