Owners of beloved Adelaide live music venue The Gov have been forced to apologise to members of Perth band Boat Show following some insensitive comments made by a sound technician on Saturday night.

Taking to Facebook following a slot as the support act for Hockey Dad, Sydney’s Dear Seattle made a post in which they slammed the actions of the venue’s sound technician who reportedly asked a member of Boat Show, “How’s the glass ceiling going for you?”

“This is a public statement to say a MASSIVE FUCK YOU to the sound guy in Adelaide who thought it would be okay to say “How’s the glass ceiling going for you?” to a female member of one of the supports tonight, leaving her in tears upon being told what it meant,” Dear Seattle posted.

“You’re a fucking piece of shit and you’re what’s wrong with this industry. You better believe we’ll be getting a new sound guy for the second show tomorrow night. So not on. Fuck you.”

Almost 24 hours later, the venue responded via a comment on the post, stating that the venue’s owners “unreservedly apologise for the dumb comment made by our sound technician Mike on Saturday night, towards a female artist.”

“There’s no excuse for comments like these in the workplace, or anywhere,” the Tonkin family continued. “The Gov has been a long-time supporter of musicians, male, female and otherwise. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive venue. Perhaps that is what is most disappointing.”

Despite this apology, many commenters criticised The Gov for what they perceived as a lack of action on their part, with many noting that they only appropriate course of action in this situation would be to dismiss the sound technician in question from from his position.

“Unless you’ve dismissed the guy in question you’re going to known as the joint with a sexist asshole of a sound tech.. you’re wasting your time trying to repair an already tarnished rep,” wrote one user on Facebook.

Soon though, Boat Show’s Ali Flintoff took to the comment section to set the matter straight, claiming that the sound tech in question had personally apologised to her.

“Mike has actually apologised to me personally and taken responsibility for his words and has seemed to have learnt from his actions,” Flintoff wrote. “The Gov were amazingly supportive and very quick to act and sort out the situation and i felt very looked after.”
