Amy Shark has had a big couple of months, and it all came to a head for her the other day when she managed to make it just about all the way to the top of the triple j Hottest 100 heap with her massive single ‘Adore’, losing out only to the mega-power of Flume.

Understandably, she had a bit of a stressful day in the end. In fact, she’s still feeling the effects a bit, but has at least been able to chat to triple j’s Ben & Liam about the whole experience. Amy was, of course, a triple j Unearthed artist before her sudden rise – a trajectory also echoed by the #3 entrant Tash Sultana, who’s had an equally-massive year.

“It was definitely not an easy day for me,” Amy has tole the triple j hosts. “I’m still a little bit in shock about the whole thing but obviously extremely, extremely excited and grateful about it.”

Like most of us, Amy spent the day at a barbecue party trying to act normal, but was feeling the stress all day and constantly ducking out of convos to listen in on the next track. After a while, it all became a bit much.

“I’d be mid-conversation with someone being like ‘oh sorry, I just need to listen’ and it was like number ninety-something. Eventually I was like ‘I think I just need to go home’.”

Back home with a few mates and some champers, the whole focus was on the countdown, and the tension mounted. “It was so stressful between every song because I was like ‘I don’t know, maybe I’ve missed it — this is getting pretty high now, this is scary’.”

Then, the moment came, when Amy realised she’d made the top two.

“I heard Tash Sultana and I was just a mess and then when the first strum of ‘Adore’ came on I just hit the ground and was just in a ball of tears.”

While she may not have done the impossible and knocked Flume’s enormous ‘Never Be Like You’, Amy’s achievement is no less monumental.

“You listen to that countdown for so long. I’ve loved it for so many years and never in my life even was like ‘oh, one day…’ — I’ve never even said ‘one day I want a song on there’, it was just like a never thing for me, like it’s never gonna happen. You’ve gotta be this really amazing artist with lots of stuff going on. So yeah, it was a very very special day for me. Very special.”

You can check out the full interview here, which goes on to describe how she came up with ‘Adore’ and what the track’s really all about.

With the stress of the countdown behind her but the eyes of the Aussie music scene now firmly locked on anything she does from here, Amy’s now about to face the new challenge of trying to recreate that success with whatever she does next.

For now, she can just concentrate on her upcoming tour, which she announced during the countdown. With the tickets selling out right away and a bunch of shows being added, at least she won’t need to stress about filling seats any time soon.
