Just a couple of months after the band announced they were back in the studio and recording new music, Bad Religion have dropped their first single in five years, a topical tune called ‘The Kids Are Alt-Right’.

Only a matter of hours after we sung the praises of one of the best compilation series to be released on Epitaph Records (the label owned by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz), the group have announced they’re back with a bang, releasing the first tune from their upcoming record, and their first release since 2013’s Christmas Songs EP.

Back in April, we noted how Bad Religion had revealed they were back in the studio, though we weren’t too sure when and if we were going to be hearing the fruits of these labours. Now, the group have dropped ‘The Kids Are Alt-Right’, a highly-relevant political tune which is accompanied by a slick animated video that illustrates the song’s message.

With lyrics that focus on religion, gun control, and right-wing politics, it’s a true return to form the famously outspoken Los Angeles punks. Now with the group on tour throughout the next few months, all we have to do is sit back and wonder when that new record is set to be released.

Singer Greg Graffin explained to Loudwire in 2017 that a new album was indeed “on the horizon”, though he noted the group are a bit cautious of trying to top their last one. “True North was such a good album that I don’t want to put out something that indicates we’re ageing,” Graffin explained. “We do plan on getting another record out there, hopefully before our 40th anniversary [in 2020].”

Back in March though, a German website noted that Bad Religion had announced their long awaited 17th album is set to be released mid-year, though the group have not confirmed or denied this information.

As it stands, it’s been six years since Bad Religion were last in Australia, playing as part of the 2012 Soundwave festival. Whether this new material might mean a new Aussie tour remains to be seen, but we’re definitely excited to see whatever may come.
