Big Day Out 2014 lineup has been announced and as promised by the festival promoters who have been hyping it as “the biggest and best ever”, it’s a mightily impressive list of bands.

Big Day Out CEO Adam Zammit previously stated that “2 of our headliners have never played an Australian festival,” of the Big Day Out 2014 lineup while fellow promoter Ken West added of the festival bill-toppers, “I was hoping for one ‘White Whale’, managed to get two and ended up with three.”

So who’s been harpooned and landed for the Big Day Out 2014 lineup?

The three major headliners for the 2014 edition of the one-day touring event, playing full concert sets, are Pearl Jam, Blur, and Arcade Fire.

Headlining the festival for the first time in a series of exclusive performances, including closing out each of the two Sydney legs with different sets each night is Pearl Jam. The band will arrive off the back of their tenth studio album, Lightning Bolt, due October, which kickstarted rumours of an early 2014 visit from the grunge survivors.

Returning to Australia for the first time since 1997, at long last, Blur’s reunion trail checks into Australia. The classic Brtipop group – Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree – has even inspired the crafting of a new stage in honour of them, called the Love Stage, where the band will finish with a winning set of classics after Pearl Jam have concluded their set at the Blue Stage. “When you look at the headliners, the second slot, third slot and fourth slot are probably all festival headliners.”

After delivering their anthemic art rock at the 2008 Big Day Out, Canadian collective Arcade Fire return to play the Big Day Out 2014 in their first shows Down Under since releasing 2010’s Grammy award-scooping The Suburbs. They also have a new record in the can, due 29th October, which producer James ‘LCD Soundsystem’ Murphy has been talking up in the press. Arcade Fire will precede Pearl Jam on the Blue Stage.

Beyond the triple threat of the Big Day Out 2014 lineup headliners, the list is as Big Day Out New Zealand promoter Campbell Smith promised: “When you look at the headliners, the second slot, third slot and fourth slot are probably all festival headliners.”

Also announced for the Big Day Out 2014 lineup is rap legend Snoop Dogg (aka Snoop Lion), production masters Major Lazer, and rounding out the electronic contingent for the Boiler Room is Sweden’s Steve Angello (formerly of Swedish House Mafia) and Australia’s own Flume.

International acts include  Toro Y Moi, The Naked And Famous, Mudhhoney, Grouplove, The Lumineers, Mac Miller, Ghost, The 1975, Dillon Francis, DIIV, and the band that jumped the gun ahead of the lineup announcement – Portugal. The Man.

There’s a stack of Aussies on the Big Day Out 2014 lineup, including the psychelicious Tame Impala, Cosmic Psychos, DZ Deathrays, Northlane, Pez, Kingswood, Loon Lake, Rüfüs.

With a diverse mix that runs the gamut from rock to rave, metal to mashup, chill to thrill, and everything in between, you can see why the Big Day Out 2013 lineup managed to win the dogged respect of rival festival promoter AJ Maddah who called it “SUPERB… BDO line-up is truly EPIC.”

Along with the Big Day Out 2014 lineup comes confirmation that the delicious Chow Town, the reinvention of festival food that was launched for Big Day Out’s 21st birthday earlier this year, will be returning for 2014, once again led by culinary geniuses Ben & Elvis (of Porteño/Bodega).

There will also be more Big Day Out 2014 lineup additions and bells and whistles to come, including The Lilypad, special attractions and distractions, while presenting partner MTV has some “very exciting news” in the coming weeks.
