The Brisbane Festival 2014 lineup has been announced with the annual arts and music festival confirming an eclectic music programme among its mix of arts, theatre, dance, comedy, and other cultural events.

The three-week long annual festival will take place from 6th September until the 27th September, hosting over 440 performances and 73 productions this year.

The lion’s share of Brisbane Festival 2014’s music will take place at the Telstra Spiegeltent, returning this year with a late night weekend curfew, allowing patrons to party on Friday and Saturday nights until 2.30am with midnight lineups and free late-night DJ sets.

Among the artists playing the Spiegeltent will be Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson, Argentinian singer-songwriter Juana Molina, hip hop figurehead Urthboy, exotica tastemakers The Bombay Royale, spoonerism-loving producer Com Truise, Seattle songsmith Damien Jurado (in his debut Australian visit), the Grammy-winning Joe Henry, and Elvis Costello’s star keys player Steve Nieve (playing his band leader’s material).

There’s plenty more Aussies performing at Brisbane Festival’s big top too, including a rare solo performance from ‘Australia’s best songwriter‘, The Drones’ Gareth Liddiard, Midnight Juggernauts – celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Ariels, ‘stoner pop’ trio Dune Rats, psych-dance adventurers Miami Horror, alt-pop auteur Andy Bull, and two of Australia’s best emerging producers: The Kite String Tangle and Vancouver Sleep Clinic.

The lion’s share of Brisbane Festival 2014’s music will take place at the Telstra Spiegeltent…

Another major music programme highlight is Philip Glass’s opera The Perfect American, which “imagines the final months of Walt Disney’s life“, making Brisbane the third city in the world to host the event. Plus Nai Palm – composer, vocalist, and guitarist of the Grammy-nominated Hiatus Kaiyote – will perform a solo show at Clem Jones City Hall.

There’s also free live jazz, soul, swing, latin, and blues hosted at QPAC’s American Music Club series, the return of QUT Sessions (whose alumni includes Ball Park Music and Kate Miller-Heidke), the Santos Twilight Series on the Brisbane River, and performances from New York-via-Australia vocalist Clem Jones, French gypsy swingers La Mauvaise Réputation, the Borodin Quartet, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and more.

Tickets and details of all shows are available at the official Brisbane Festival website, with Artistic
Director Noel Staunton warning that Telstra Spiegeltent tickets will “sell like hot cakes and even though there is more room than ever before in this iconic venue, it would be wise to get in quick so you do not miss out.”

Brisbane Festival 2014 also marks Staunton’s last as Artistic Director, signing off after four years of service following the closing event, the Sunsuper Riverfire, a 16-tonne firework display on Saturday 27th September.
