Chance The Rapper was the musical guest on this weekend’s edition of ‘Saturday Night Live’, and he owned the show, performing two of his own songs and taking part in another, more festive number.
Along with long-serving SNL cast member Kenan Thompson, Chance channelled Run-DMC to celebrate President Barack Obama’s last Christmas as President, while also bemoaning the four years of Trumpism that will follow it.
‘Jingle Barack’ offers up choice lines, such as: “We still got Barack / So you know what that means / We shooting some hoops in high-waist jeans. So, ’tis the season / Let’s spread some cheer / It’s the last Christmas with Barack still here.”
Chance raps about stockpiling Home Alone DVDs (a wise suggestion) and binge-drinking eggnog, before claiming “Imma hurt myself before we lose Obamacare.”It’s silly and funny, and quite a decent song to boot (although it borrows liberally from Run-DMC’s own Chrissy classic ‘Christmas in Hollis’). Make sure you stick around for the very appropriate use of footage of Obama dropping the mic at his final White House Correspondents’ Dinner, too.
Chance was the perfect performer for SNL to get to honour Obama. His father worked for Obama back when he was a Senator, and this April, Chance met with the President at the White House to discuss the My Brother’s Keeper Challenge. More recently, he performed at the White House tree lighting ceremony.
